600hp Audi TT Clubsport Turbo Unveiled

Concept car featuring an electrically-driven turbo, wide body kit, and more to debut at upcoming Worthersee festival

It's the month of May and Audi just unveiled a concept making close to 600 hp, which could only mean one thing – the return of the annual Worthersee festival where Volkswagen Group rolls out its wild and high-powered concepts. This year, the festival takes place from May 13-16 and will include this Audi TT Clubsport Turbo concept that features an electrically-driven turbocharger, a super wide body kit, and more.

Volkswagen Group began development on electric turbochargers a few years ago, and the company says the TT Clubsport Turbo is evidence that the technology is close to production ready. Here, Audi bolts an electric and conventional turbo to its 2.5-liter inline-five engine for a total output of 591 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual and Audi Quattro all-wheel drive system complete the drivetrain.

As previously reported, the main benefit of the electric turbo is the elimination of turbo lag. Since the compressor relies on a 48-volt electrical system, it’s able to spool and provide boost instantly, before handing off boosting duties to the traditional, exhaust-driven turbocharger. That said, Audi claims the TT Clubsport launches off the line in a hurry before reaching 62 mph in just 3.6 seconds.

The concept’s body kit makes it at least 5.5 inches wider than a normal 2016 Audi TT. In addition to its gigantic fixed rear wing, the TT Clubsport Turbo is fitted with 20-inch wheels, carbon-fiber ceramic brakes, and a roll cage.

It’s unclear if the TT will be the first vehicle to get electric turbocharging, though the technology will likely make its way throughout Volkswagen Group's portfolio. Audi, for example, has already tested the technology on an RS 5 TDI concept, and rumors suggest the Bugatti Veyron’s successor will also feature electrically-driven turbos.
