With the new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata soon coming to showroom floors, Mazda Australia decided it would be a good idea to pit the all-new model against the first-gen Miata on a lap at the Circuit de Calafat in Catalonia, Spain. Which model will come out on top?
This head-to-head comes in celebration of the Miata's 25th anniversary, showcasing just what makes the MX-5 such an iconic roadster. From handling to its fun-to-drive personality, the Mazda MX-5 Miata continues to shine, even all these years later.
When looking at the two models, the new Miata has a clear advantage in terms of power. The first-gen was powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that managed to produce 116 hp and 100 lb-ft of torque. The new model, however, delivers a bigger punch with its 2.0-liter four-cylinder that delivers 155 hp and 148 lb-ft.
Endurance racer Jade Paveley will drive the 1990 Miata, while fellow endurance racer Owen Mildenhall will sit behind the wheel of the 2016 Miata. However, to make this more of a fair fight, Paveley will be given a four second head start. Will it be enough to win against the all-new 2016 Miata?
