The U.K. will be the first market to get the new Lexus IS 200t, which will be the brand’s second turbocharged model following the 2015 Lexus NX 200t crossover. While Lexus has only confirmed the new engine for the U.K., it shouldn’t be much longer before the automaker announces plans for a U.S.-spec version.
While the arrival of the Lexus IS 200t is certainly welcome news, it’s unclear if the automaker will retire or keep the IS 250 and its 2.5-liter six-cylinder. That relatively archaic engine puts out a meager 204 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. For folks in the U.K., the IS 200t’s 2.0-liter turbo-four will be tuned to 241 hp and 258 lb-ft and will be mated to an eight-speed automatic for rear-drive models.
This will put the base IS in a much better position against its competitors. The BMW 328i, for example, makes 240 hp and 255 lb-ft from its 2.0-liter I-4, while the Cadillac ATS churns out a healthy 272 hp and 295 lb-ft from a 2.0-liter turbo-four.
Lexus says the IS 200t will be available to order in the U.K. this September, with pricing details to arrive at a later date.
