1991 Acura NSX Tapped as Next Clarion Builds Project Car

Clarion to restore and customize everyday supercar with state-of-the-art electronics and performance upgrades

Aug 5, 2015

Clarion revealed the next undertaking of its Clarion Builds program, the restoration and modification of a first-year Acura NSX. Following the same principles as Clarion Builds' first build of a 1974 BMW 2002, Clarion will partner with several hand-picked services and parts providers, as well as specialists that cater to the NSX community and automotive enthusiasts, to bring this high-mileage NA1 chassis into the 21st century with regards to its electronics, engine, suspension, and other areas while staying true to the car's original design and driving dynamics.

The recipient NSX is from 1991 and has 230,000 miles on the odometer. That generation of the sports car boasted a 3.0-liter DOHC VTEC V-6, the C30A, making a reported 270hp and 210 lb.-ft. of torque at the flywheel when new. The C30 mill is transversely mounted in the mid-engine, RWD car, and is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. It currently rocks a factory Berlina Black exterior with tan interior.

"The idea behind Clarion Builds is to take on and promote the restoration of cars that people can connect with, cars that have timeless designs, legendary performance, and a great story behind them," said Allen H. Gharapetian, Vice President of Marketing and Product Planning at Clarion Corporation of America and the Chief of the Clarion Builds program. "Honda brought to market a car that could not only hold its own against world-class supercars, but could be driven daily and, as with any Honda, could easily go hundreds of thousands of miles with just basic maintenance. As a year-one car ... our NSX project car is proof that Honda accomplished what they set out to build, and we think this is undeniably an ideal next project for the Clarion Builds program."

The aim of Clarion's "Clarion Builds" campaign is pretty straightforward: get people stoked on car culture by finding abused, neglected and otherwise overlooked iconic old cars and trucks and showing folks what it takes to restore them to their former brilliance - maybe even update them a bit. The year-one NSX is already a collector's car, with interest gaining in light of the pending launch of the all new 2016 Acura NSX. Be sure to visit the Clarion Build's website for updates and Clarion's YouTube channel to see video about this NSX and the road it takes to resurrection.
