Toyota Unveils S-FR Racing Concept at Tokyo Auto Salon 2016

Gazoo Racing debuts a race-themed version of the upcoming Toyota S-FR

Jan 20, 2016

Toyota unveiled its S-FR concept at the Tokyo Motor Show last October. It didn't drop many jaws from the get-go, but it did show some interesting resemblances to the original Toyota Sports 800 from the sixties, plus it also had the right formula to please sport compact car enthusiasts - front-engine, lightweight, rear-wheel drive and affordable. Toyota tells us it's priced to be cheaper and sized up to be smaller than the 86 (Scion FR-S). It's also suppose to be less expensive than the Mazda MX-5/Miata, which it appears to be aimed to compete with. The S-FR is headed to production later this year and looks like it'll receive a 130hp 1.5-liter four-cylinder with a curb weight of 2,160 lbs. With all this said, it's unlikely we will be getting the S-FR here in the States anytime soon, but who knows. It would fit under the Scion umbrella nicely if you ask us...

Fast forward three months from the S-FR's debut to the '16 Tokyo Auto Salon where we were pleasantly surprised to see a racing concept developed by Gazoo Racing. This race-themed version by Gazoo might be the start to getting the world excited about the new Toyota sports car. It features a wider track thanks to new fenders all-around, plus the exterior has been upgraded with carbon-fiber aero from the front lip, canards, rear diffuser, rear wing, side skirts and the vented hood.

While this is all a concept right now, we have no doubt the S-FR will take off in Japan with time. It has the recipe to be a more affordable, fun-to-drive coupe, that'll create a trifecta of sports cars within the Toyota lineup - the 86, S-FR and Supra successor (FT-1 concept). Exciting things are around the corner Toyota fans!
