For the first time in european car Tuner GP history, we are running a single make and model competition. A field of Volkswagen Golfs will face off against each other allowing tuners to compete head-to-head on the same platform. All variations of the Golf from GTI, Golf R, R32 or even a Rallye Golf will be allowed to compete.
All competitors will be street driven tuner cars, no dedicated racecars. The competition is open to 2 and 4-door cars, full interiors, back seats and all interior pieces in place, including the cargo area. The front seats can be changed to racing seats if desired, but the car must still have two front seats. Any rollover protection, body-stiffening/bracing must be bolted-in.
The powertrain is limited to any variation and combination that was offered in a production Golf - engine and transmission swaps are allowed. Updating or backdating is allowed, as long as it was offered in a production Golf. The engine must remain in the factory location. Big turbos, multiple turbos, supercharging is all allowed. The car must be streetable and “street legal” meaning aftermarket downpipes are allowed, as along as the car is it is still equipped with a functioning catalytic convertor. Use of nitrous oxide is not allowed.
Any bolt on suspension modification is allowed. The modification of subframes is allowed, as long as the suspension type is still the same what was offered by the factory; i.e. all cars will have MacPherson Strut front suspension, although switching from a torsion beam to multi-link rear is allowed.
Aerodynamic modifications are allowed, but the car must be able to clear a speed bump. Braking modifications are allowed as long as they are deemed safe and reliable.
The spec tire this year will be Continental’s UHP summer tire, the ExtremeContact DW, which all competitors will be provided with one set in a size of their choice, staggered fitments are allowed.
The competition will consist of two events, drag racing run on the prepared surface quarter-mile at Auto Club Dragway and the 1.2-mile Exotics Racing Road Course, both at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California.
Coverage of the 2015 VW Golf Tuner GP will be featured across european car’s magazine, social and web properties, and an event video will be produced and shared on Motor Trend’s YouTube channel and european car’s Facebook page.
