Subaru debuted its new Rallycross Fighter at the 2015 New York auto show this week. The new 2015 Subaru WRX STI VT15x will compete in Red Bull Global Rallycross and X Games Rallycross events.

Built in collaboration with Vermont SportsCar, the VT15x is the third iteration of the Subaru STI-based Rallycross Fighter from the partnership in four years. The new car will debut in Bucky Lasek’s new livery over a rallycross-spec wide body and Method Race Wheels.

“We made huge strides in durability and competitiveness last season,” said Lance Smith, Vermont SportsCar Team Principal, in a release. “The VT15x is almost entirely-new technology. This car is a revolution, not just an evolution.”

The VT15x Rallycross Fighter is powered by a 580-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter Boxer engine mated to a six-speed SADEV sequential gearbox that routes power to all four wheels. Built for GRC and FIA Rallycross homologation standards, the VT15x will hit 60 mph in a claimed 2.0 seconds.

Updates to the VT15x from the previous VT14x include handling improvements from optimized weight balance, center-of-gravity, suspension geometry, and aerodynamics. The engine was tuned for more power and better response.

STI is increasing their support of our U.S. based efforts in rallycross,” said Rob Weir, Subaru Motorsports Marketing Manager. "Their expertise and development resources will take our program to an even more competitive level.”

Last year, Subaru Rally Team USA made five podium finishes in Red Bull GRC and won a Silver Medal at X Games. Driver Sverre Isachsen won the Global Rallycross Seattle event. Bucky Lasek and Sverre Isachsen return, joined by Travis Pastrana, to the X Games and and other events that will be announced later.

“Confidence is high within the Subaru camp that we have a winning package of driver talent driving faster cars for this season,” said Weir. “Our goal in 2014 was getting to the front row of every final and being on the podium. This year, our only goal is winning.”

The first Red Bull Global Rallycross round May 31 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. opens the season for Subaru Rally Team USA, with the next event being the X Games June 5 in Austin, Texas.
