Los Angeles, Calif., - smart USA Distributor LLC, a subsidiary of Penske Automotive Group, Inc. (NYSE: PAG), is showcasing the 2011 smart fortwo for the first time at the 2010 L.A. Auto Show. As a brand dedicated to the conservation of fuel and environmental friendliness, smart is featuring two electric transportation solutions in its exhibit at the Los Angeles Convention Center: the new smart fortwo electric drive and the smart ebike, a versatile concept for emission-free electric mobility on two wheels.
Since its inception, smart's innovative and unique vehicle concept has combined forward-looking technologies with individual urban mobility. The 2011 smart fortwo builds upon this concept with enhanced safety, an all-new interior, new entertainment features and the addition of available technology. The smart fortwo continues to be a modern status symbol, combining responsibility to the environment and ecological standards with a high fun factor while providing superior comfort and safety.
The smart fortwo's high level of safety provides even greater occupant protection for 2011. The number of standard airbags in all smart fortwo coupes is doubled to eight, and the passion cabriolet number increases by two to a total of six. The addition of knee bolster airbags in every model provides greater leg protection while new standard window curtain airbags for both the pure and passion coupes offer greater protection in side collisions.
The redesigned interior on the 2011 smart fortwo greets the driver and passenger with a fresh, inviting atmosphere, including a new instrument panel. Ambient lighting makes its debut on the 2011 model as an option to create a pleasant aura and enhance the atmosphere of the vehicle interior during nighttime driving. Cruise control is available for the first time in the United States as an option on all 2011 smart fortwo models. New storage compartments add to the fortwo's appeal as a car for everyday use.
The 2011 smart fortwo features new advanced communication and entertainment systems to take the fun of driving the smart fortwo to the next level. The new optional highline radio is a versatile multimedia system with a large 6.5-inch touch screen display, an integrated navigation system with perspective map display and a Bluetooth hands-free system. Additionally, a new optional surround sound system provides a superior listening experience, making smart a leader in sound technology for the micro car class.
smart USA is also showcasing electric transportation products from the smart brand. Formally introduced to the United States in June, the smart fortwo electric drive marks a natural evolution of the smart brand and amplifies its environmental leadership. The vehicle is a zero-emission visual statement on the ultimate conservation of materials, space and natural resources and further defines the independent spirit of smart. smart USA is strategically deploying a fleet of 250 model year 2011 vehicles beginning this year, equipped with second generation electric drive technology, across the United States. Series production begins in 2012 on third generation models which will be sold to consumers through smart USA's dealer network.
The smart exhibit also features an electric bicycle concept. The smart ebike, which premiered at the Paris Motor Show in September, is intended for effortless city biking, setting appearance and concept standards with a futuristic look, discretely designed lightweight wheels and technical features. The electric drive motor, integrated in the rear wheel, delivers extra power when the rider pedals to conserve the rider's strength and mitigate the fear of hills. Additionally, it features an advanced smart drive kit app for smart phones which acts as a speedometer or heart rate monitor. Further, the smartphone can automatically activate the drive system when it is placed in the specially designed mount and immobilize the ebike when the phone is removed to protect against theft.
The smart exhibit at the LA Auto Show also features the smart fortwo lightshine special edition, a limited production vehicle with packaged equipment features that are otherwise only available as separate options. In addition, the exhibit displays the winning entry from deviantART's "Skinned Smartly" vehicle wrap design contest with smart USA, installed on a 2011 smart fortwo passion coupe. The contest helped launch the smart Expressions vehicle customization program over the summer.
