Years ago, flying used to be fun and glamorous, and traveling by van was tedious and undignified. Things have changed around completely, thanks in part to Mercedes-Benz and a special version of its Sprinter. A company called Brilliant Transportation runs a fleet of these beautifully appointed, chauffeur-driven vehicles on both coasts. The New York side runs between Boston and Washington D.C. while the Los Angeles counterpart goes up to Santa Barbara, down to San Diego and across to Las Vegas. Inside are big leather-covered seats, hardwood floors, a couple of 32-inch TV screens, Wi-Fi, fridges, desks... and passengers can use their cell phones whenever they like. Thanks to clean diesel engines, these Sprinters return 20 mpg and have a range of 400 miles. Oh, and they don’t charge extra for a suitcase.
