  • World premiere at gamescom in Cologne
  • Fans design helmet for Rahel Frey
  • Audi heavily involved in the Formula Student Germany competition

Ingolstadt - World premiere in Cologne: The Audi R8 LMS racing simulator will be unveiled at the gamescom fair this Wednesday. It is designed to simulate the racetrack experience in simulation games such as Gran Turismo 5 on the Sony PlayStation. German racing driver Christopher Mies will present the Audi R8 LMS racing simulator, which was developed by Sony and Audi and which has been custom-built by quattro GmbH. Some of Mies's wins in the R8 LMS include the GT3 European Championship and the Bathurst 12 Hour race (Australia).

Creative heads: Swiss racing driver Rahel Frey, who is competing in the DTM with Audi Sport Team Phoenix, will be getting a new helmet design for the season finale of the top touring car event. The unusual thing about the helmet is that it is the result of a design competition run by her personal sponsor, the drink brand Capri-Sonne. The competition can be found on the company's website and on its Facebook page, and the closing date for entries is September 11. The winner, who will be chosen by a jury that includes Capri-Sonne and Audi employees, will have the honor of personally presenting the helmet to Rahel and will also receive grandstand tickets for the DTM finale in Hockenheim.

Audi pitches in: Audi was heavily involved in the Formula Student Germany competition at the Hockenheimring, making up part of the jury, with a recruiting stand, and also directly supporting a team. 105 college teams from all over the world recently attended the competition, which identified the best overall concepts comprising construction, financial planning, sales arguments, and cost-effectiveness. Audi backed the team from the Technical University of Munich, which came second in the category of vehicles with an internal combustion engine. There were also a dozen Audi technicians on the jury, working with experts from the automotive, motorsport, and supplier industries. One of the highly impressed guests was Marcel Fassler, who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Audi in mid-June. AUDI AG also presented its own prize, the Audi Best Lightweight Concept Award, which went to the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Lightweight construction is very important to Audi in its motorsport endeavors: This technology played a part in the Audi R18 TDI winning in Le Mans.

Rostrum position for Phoenix: Andreas Simonsen of Sweden and Christopher Haase of Germany put on a great display of catching up and overtaking on the fifth racing weekend of the ADAC GT Masters in Spielberg, Austria. In the first of two races, the pair, who drive an Audi R8 LMS for Phoenix Racing Pole Promotion, managed to move up from their starting position of 24th to finish third, despite contending with persistent rainfall. The best R8 LMS duo in the second race were the Germans Luca Ludwig and Christopher Mies (ABT Sportsline), who finished eighth and therefore defended their third place in the overall rankings.

Formula 1, the DTM, and other motorsport disciplines are currently on a break for the summer. The summer break in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) is especially long, lasting for ten weeks. What is this period like for the drivers?

Having a break between races is generally a good idea, especially in the case of endurance races like the ILMC. But I have to say I do find the break a bit long. I think a break of three weeks would be ideal. But we accept the dates the way they are and make the most of the extra time, for example with test drives. I have definitely never been bored during the summer break.

How are you spending the time between the Imola race in early July and the race at Silverstone at the beginning of September?

Among other things, I have been to New Zealand to take part in a "Driving Experience" for Audi and also attended the inauguration of a new Audi terminal in Auckland, which was also attended by the New Zealand prime minister. There have been Audi Cup dates in Munich, and I took part in the Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix and worked as a driver steward at the Formula 1 grand prix at the Nurburgring. This weekend, I will be participating in the Copenhagen Triathlon Challenge together with triathlon star Rasmus Henning and world-class swimmer Jacob Carstensen. It's for a good cause and I will be tackling the 180-kilometer cycling part of the challenge.

How else do you keep in shape for the upcoming motorsport challenges?

Cycling is part of my standard program. But I also like other sports - I regularly go jogging, sometimes with my girlfriend Hanne, and also do lots of outdoor things with my kids. Golf is an important element of staying in shape, and helps to train me mentally. But to be honest, I am already itching to get behind the wheel at Silverstone.

Coming up next week
August 20, Knutstorp (S), Swedish GT Series, round 5
August 21, Slovakia Ring (SK), FIA GT3 European Championship, round 5
