Born in Sweden, Simon Martin moved to the UK at age 11. He studied photography at Blackpool College of Art and subsequently trained with some of the best fashion and location/car photographers in London.

Simon saw what could be done with images on a computer at an early stage of his career and realized the direction the whole industry was going to take. Having mastered working on his own digital images, requests came in from other photographers to work on theirs and pretty soon the job-title had to be changed from “Photographer” to “Retoucher.” He soon realized that he hadn’t picked up a camera in ages and really hadn’t missed it. He was finding the digital domain too absorbing.

Recently things have come full-circle with the inception of Artycar. Simon moved out of London with his family and settled near Silverstone, the home of Formula One, six years ago and automotive-mania started to take hold. Simon’s Artycar pieces are not photographs, although they originate as such, and can’t be called paintings either, even though some of the work is done freehand. Graphic Automotive Art or Digital Car Art are the closest descriptions he can find. Simon brings this type of automotive art right up to date. There is a great deal of retro looking car art on the market currently, but Simon likes to create something much more graphic and contemporary. The fact that the images originate as photographs allows him to represent the car accurately and the digital domain gives him the same creative freedom a painter enjoys. Simple, bold, contemporary art of cherished vehicles is the result. – Ed.
