Just in case anyone thought Volvo was losing its safety mojo, the company has just come up with another world first: the pedestrian airbag. Providing the pedestrian detection system with automatic braking function proves insufficient and sensors recognize the thump of a jaywalker against front bumper, then the airbag at the other end of the hood is deployed, covering the lower third of the windshield and curving around to the A-pillars. This feature debuts on the V40 compact that won’t go on sale in the United States, but there’s the possibility of a crossover SUV variant called the XC40. And chances are other Volvo models will get the same technology.
