After the recent TTA Elite Racing Series race at Tierp Arena, the Volvo Polestar team secured both the Team and Manufacturers championship in the Swedish national series. And as the go into the Gothenburg finale, driver Fredrik Ekblom needs just one point to secure the Drivers championship as well, giving the team a clean sweep in the TTA’s inaugural year.
The Volvo Polestar team had hoped to secure all three championship titles in Tierp but the concrete barriers in the newly designed Arena meant the team had to fight for its results.
The problems began in free practice when Fredrik Larsson crashed his BMW into the concrete barrier. Alex Danielsson would also destroyed his Citroen in qualifying, which meant the session was aborted before the Volvo Polestar drivers had a chance to make their final qualifying attempts. As a result, drivers Fredrik Ekblom, Robert Dahlgren, Thed Björk and Tommy Rustad were forced to settle for sixth, ninth, tenth and fifteenth positions on the grid, respectively.
With such poor grid positions, the Volvo Polestar squad was forced to push from the start of the race. Fortunately, Rustad converted his fifteenth position into a sixth finish. Dahlgren finished eighth after being hit hard at the end, loosing several places. Björk took his S60 to fourth, while team-mate Ekblom scored second.
That meant that Ekblom and Björk in the blue Polestar team (two cars are blue, two are black) secured victory in the Team championship for Volvo Polestar. Their combined points for the day, as the two best Volvo drivers, also secured victory for Volvo in the Manufacturers championship.
The Tierp race was won by Saab driver Linus Ohlsson, who inched nine points closer to Ekblom in the Drivers’ championship. Ekblom leads with 29 points, with only 29 points left to race for. Consequently, Ekblom needs to claim one more point in the final round to secure the title.
The finale will be decided at Gothenburg City Race Arena on September 29.
