Known for making waves in the motorsports world, Aston Martin adds another notch to its bespoke belt. Taking the #97 V8-powered Vantage GTE from Aston Martin Racing to the top of the podium at the Shanghai Six Hours. With their win, the team secured their 2nd place overall finish in the GTE Pro Championship series. Aston Martin’s win in Shanghai make it the teams six straight podium finish in the WEC series.
The win wouldn’t come easy with the #77 Porsche and #51 Ferrari in hot pursuit. Fortunately the team qualified on pole for ensuring a front of the pack advantage. But when the lights went out the team would relinquish the lead when they got held up behind a stalled LMP2 car.
As the race progressed drivers Darren Turner and Stefan Mücke would build up a 50 second lead at the half way mark. The #77 Porsche was hot on the heels of the Gulf livery Vantage and would prove their push for podium with several impressive pit stops, the most important coming near the end when they snuck out in front of the Vantage to take the lead again. Turner knew the Porsche would have to pit one more time and pushed hard to regain the lead and would do so on the 169th lap giving Aston Martin racing their first win of the season.
“We’ve had an amazing weekend. This result is a great reward for everyone’s efforts. The car has been at the sharp end in every race and the guys here have got faster and faster in the pit stops. It’s a true team effort and they should all be proud of what has been achieved here. What a way to end the season!” stated the jubilant Turner.
