Audi's big tease or big test?

When a company makes a one off car with no intention of selling for market, it makes you think of their true intentions. Are they really making just one, or are they showing it off to see just how much the public will clamor for their very special car? Only time will tell, but Audi will be launching a one off model of the popular TT dubbed the TT Ultra Quattro Concept at the Worthersee Festival.

What makes this TT more special than the currently produced version? Well how about a 661 lb. diet from its stock counterpart. But don't be mistaken, Audi didn't just replace some parts with carbon fiber here and there, no they really put some serious thought into every panel and part to see where significant weight savings could be made.

The final weigh in of the TT tips in at a seriously light 2449 while adding 95hp over stock (bringing it to 305hp) and 31 lb. ft. more torque than stock (coming in at 295 lb. ft.) pared with a six-speed manual - thank you Audi. This little rocket will reach a top speed of 173 mph in just 4.2-seconds. The four-cylinder engine isn't only significantly more powerful, there are also several modifications including the crankcase, crankshaft, balancer shafts, flywheel, sump, and even some bolts and ancillary units, which help to reduce weight by 55 lb. A game of Tetris was implemented when Audi relocated the lithium-ion battery underneath the driver to help balance even weight distribution.

The body structure plus optimized detachable parts sheds 220 lb. from the TT's body. Several well thought out components such as carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFPR) in the rear, center tunnel, B-pillars, roof as well as magnesium floor components and hinge reinforcements add to weight reduction.

For extra stopping power at high speeds, the front brakes feature ceramic discs and aluminum fixed calipers, while the wheels are made from CFPR and feature high-strength aluminum spokes. While excellent stopping power and weight savings is good, the titanium exhaust with its single centrally mounted tailpipe should make for some sweet sounding notes only worthy of the Audi name. The weight saving accomplished here is another 44 lb. only adding to the TT's lean look.

Although slightly more unconventional, some other significant weight saving were made with the coil springs in the suspension. Switching from the classic steel to a fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) helps to reduce weight along with something even more unconventional; compact cameras used to replace exterior mirrors, which transfer images into the cockpit, creating less turbulent air over the shoulders.

Adding to the good looks of the TT concept is the large motorsports-esc spoiler made of carbon, while the supporting component is milled aluminum. Changes to the interior also adds to weight saving with FRP buckets seats from the R8 GT, while CFRP replaces conventional materials on the door trim, center console and the cross-bracing replacing the rear seats.

What happens with most cars optimized for less weight is some things get left out such as air conditioning, electric windows, and electromechanical parking brakes. But Audi has included all of these conveniences for not only a thrilling drive but also a comfortable one. We only wish we could buy one...
