With the increasing importance of the Chinese auto market, VW has announced a new Crossover concept, which you can read about elsewhere in the News section here at europeancarweb.com. It will also be revealing the new iBeetle, which is the company's first vehicle with a new docking station and iPhone application.

It seems amazing that VW is so late to the Apple party but the iBeetle sets out to erase that error, allowing the iPhone to interface with the Beetle and Convertible model via a special app and docking station.

There will be two ways to interface your iPhone: either as an app or as a standard feature of the new iBeetle models that will launch at the beginning of 2014.

The new docking station is located in the center of the dashboard to integrate it with the car. All iPhone functions can then be used in the Beetle for hands-free calls, navigation, stream music, etc.

Alternatively, you can connect the phone, with both connection methods allowing access to a new VW app. Each option allows different app functions to be accessed.

For example, Spotify allows users to stream playlists or online radio into the Beetle, switching between "Spotify" and "iTunes" at any time.

The Expert functions make the iPhone an extended on-board instrument, giving a lateral acceleration G-Meter, oil and coolant temperature, a chronometer and compass.

The Trainer option allows you to compare driving times, distances and fuel economy for different routes between two destinations. The idea is to find the most efficient route home.

Other app functions include a social media reader, digital postcards to identify your location to friends, as well as photos from inside the car posted to social media. There's also a Milestone function to "rewards users with virtual "milestone stickers" for the Beetle when certain tasks have been completed to justify your very existence.

The iBeetle will come with other such as standard 18" "Disc" wheels (painted in "Galvano Grey" with chrome covers), with matching grey mirrors and side trim panels, black door sills, "iBeetle" chrome badges and chrome trim strips on the sides.

Ito reflect the iPhone's color scheme, the iBeetle can be ordered in "Candy White", "Oryx White Mother of Pearl Effect", "Black Monochrome", "Deep Black Pearl Effect", "Platinum Grey", or "Reflex Silver".
