VW to enter three Polo R WRC cars

The World Rally Championship in Portugal will see three new Polo R WRC cars entered for the first time.

Following its impressive debut on Rally Monte Carlo, the Portugese round will see newcomers Andreas Mikkelsen (driver) and Mikko Markkula (co-driver) competing in a third Polo (car #9). He will join VW regulars Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila - winners in Sweden and Mexico - as well as Sebastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia in the second Polo R WRC.

To allow for practice time for the new driver, VW has created a second team called Volkswagen Motorsport II. This alone will allow for the duo to have ten test days a year rather than sharing VW's allocation with his teammates.

Rally Portugal will consist of several events including qualifying on Tuesday morning. Friday will include the 'Mu' and 'Orique' stages. Before the big event, teams will compete against the beautiful backdrop of the National Archeology Museum. Saturday is the longest day of the rally, with six stages covering 98.6 miles, while Sunday will see the teams cover a 31-mile course twice.
