In a surprise move, BMW Motorrad Motorsport announced they have signed Ruben Xaus and that he will ride the all-new BMW S1000 RR in the 2009 World Superbike Championship.
The contract between BMW Motorrad Motorsport and Ruben is for two years and is the first step in BMW's entry into the highly competitive WSB.
The Spanish rider has been a WSB since 1998 and has taken 34 podiums, including 10 victories. He rode for the factory Ducati Corse team and was briefly elevated to a Ducati satellite team in the Moto GP series. He currently rides for the Sterilgarda/Go Eleven team in WSB on a Ducati 1098 RS 08.
Always regarded as a fast rider, his do or die approach has won Ruben many fans. Yet his propensity for crashing and relative lack of experience on four cylinder motorcycles made this a surprise announcement. We have yet to discover who will ride alongside Ruben, but a more consistent finisher is expected.
Peter Mueller from BMW stated: "Ever since we announced our entry into the 2009 World Superbike Championship, there has been speculation about our bike and riders. We have already released information about our new S1000 RR motorcycle, and today we can reveal one of the riders who will join us in this great adventure.
"Ruben is a strong and combative rider, full of enthusiasm and with a passion for racing. This fits our philosophy completely, and together we will take on this new challenge. "We know that the Superbike World Championship is a hard and competitive series, but we are not entering to make up the numbers: we will be taking part because we want to win! "Of course, we are starting with a brand new bike but, together with Ruben, we believe we can progress quickly and maybe surprise a few people along the way."
Ruben Xaus said, "When I met the BMW guys, I was very impressed by their commitment, their passion for racing and their ideas for the future. We discussed how the WSB project was going and I realized I wanted to be a part of it. It's not often you get the chance to start a completely new project, but I'm really looking forward to the challenge. Although it's going to be tough racing a new bike, I believe BMW will give me a good bike and great support. And that's all I ask for."
