Along with concepts for the GTI and Audi Q5 plus the all-new Scirocco R being unveiled at this year's Wrthersee event in Austria, VW also presented a concept based on the new Polo.
Imaginateively called "Polo Wrthersee 09", the concept car offered an impression of how a sport version of the new "hot hatch" might look.
Although the Polo has never been available in the US, our European counterparts have enjoyed models such as the Polo GT, Polo G40 and Polo GTI. From a purely technical perspective, the display piece this year was based on a mild 86hp 1.4-liter MPI version.
Just like the Golf GTI Edition at the show, the Polo stands out with its extroverted "Flash Red" body color. In addition, two black stripes extend from the front-end, over the roof to the rear.
The black 18" "Budapest" wheels with polished spokes filled the fenders of the lowered chassis. Furthermore, the black & red theme was continued to the radiator grille, mirrors, the headlight surrounds and insert in the lower bumper.
Premium black also characterized the interior. It took a path from the headliner over the air vents - each with a gloss finish - the steering wheel accents and radio panel down to the distinctive front seats. The seat's featured a similar stripe design composed of Nappa leather, flash-red Nappa leather piping, "Berry White" leather and black leather.
Red stitching also enhanced the leather on the e-brake handle, shift knob, steering wheel and door trim.
Also new at the show was a GTI cellphone. The Sony Ericsson T700 GTI Edition cell phone has a display logo and brushed aluminum surface. All menu backgrounds are styled in the GTI design. There's even a GTI ringtone. And the integrated 3.2mp camera with 3x digital zoom is ideal for capturing images at the GTI-Meet on its 25MB memory card.
