It seemed like only yesterday Volkswagen started the Jetta TDI Cup which was sanctioned by the SCCA. Two years ago, several young hopefuls competed in the series to improve their driving skills and for a chance to sign with a professional race team. This weekend at the legendary Daytona International Speedway will show five alumni do battle on a competitive level. The drivers will be taking part in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Fresh From Florida 200.
The green flag on the race falls on Friday, January 29 at 1:45 pm ET. The race will be broadcast on Speed-TV, February 13 at 7 pm ET.
Former Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup drivers racing this weekend include:
Josh Hurley – The 2008 Jetta TDI Cup Champion is returning to APR Motorsport in 2010 to drive the #181 Volkswagen GTI. Hurley earned series “Rookie of the Year” honors driving for APR in 2009.
Andrew Novich – The 2009 Jetta TDI Cup driver has signed with Irish Mikes Racing to drive the #49 Volkswagen Jetta GLI at Daytona alongside sports car legend, Randy Pobst. The Daytona race will mark Novich’s first start in the series.
Joey Atterbury / Devin Cates – Atterbury, the 2009 Jetta TDI Cup “Rookie of the Year,” is partnering with Cates to co-drive the #55 entry for TC Motorsports in 2010. Both drivers took home wins during the 2009 Jetta TDI Cup season and will be making their first start in the Grand-Am-sanctioned series at Daytona.
Ryan Ellis – Ellis will be making his first start in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge series this weekend driving the #55 car for Freedom Autosport. At this time, Ellis intends to return to the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup in 2010.
