TOYOTA PICKUP CONQUERS ICELAND'S ERUPTING VOLCANO
Just hours before its eruption brought chaos to the skies over Europe, Toyota's Hilux pickup took on the molten lava and ice of Iceland's Eyjafallajokull volcano.
The legendary pickup that BBC's Top Gear was unable to destroy, and which was the first car to be driven across the Arctic to the Magnetic North Pole, proved the perfect transport for scientists racing to set up monitoring equipment before the long-dormant mountain blew its top and sent a vast cloud of ash 30,000ft into the sky.
The vehicles used for the expedition were prepared by specialist firm Arctic Trucks, who have previously been featured at eurotuner.com/news There is also video of these trucks in action at eurotuner.com and at youtube.com/eurotuner.
These pickups were built to the same extreme specification as the one used by Jeremy Clarkson and James May for their historic polar expedition. With giant low-pressure 38" tyres gave the Hilux the ability to meet every challenge in its path as it made its way through ice and snow towards the volcano's fiery heart.
The volcano has since grounded aircraft across Europe, yet the Hilux was there to help monitor its eruption.
