Smallest car gets biggest engine
Visitors to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England this week will be able to see this extraordinary vehicle from Cummins, the world's largest independent maker of diesel engines.
The Cummins centerpiece emerged after a previous show where the company displayed its largest engine. The QSK78 engine weighs more than 11 tonnes and somebody asked if it could be fitted into his Mini...
Steve Nendick, Cummins' Communications Director, takes up the story: "We never like to let a challenge go by unanswered, so we got to thinking maybe we could fit the QSK78 into an Austin Mini.
"It proved a bit tricky to fit it under the hood, but our engineers came up with a more creative solution," he said. The QSK78, which is used to power mining trucks capable of carrying 360 tonnes, is a 78-liter V18 and 12 turbochargers to develop 3500hp and 10,326 lb-ft of torque.
