In an earlier online News story, we previewed the appearance of Audi's factory driver, Mattias Ekstrom, in the NASCAR series.
This past weekend, the double German Touring Car (DTM) Champion made a strong impression in his first NASCAR race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA. After a problem in qualifying, the Red Bull-sponsored Audi driver started in 38th position on the grid.
In the race he pushed forward, catching the group of front runners with fast lap times and a good strategy from the Red Bull Racing USA team. The Swede even led the race briefly.
With a place among the top ten in sight, Ekstrom was hit and turned around by a another car just before the end of the race. A recovery on the final laps enabled him to move up from 34th to 21st place.
