The new VW Caddy Racer made a strong start to the 2011 Volkswagen Racing Cup in the UK with a competitive first outing. The team achieved 11th and 14th place finishes in the two races at Snetterton over the weekend, 14-15 May. A tricky qualifying session saw the number 33 RAC-liveried Caddy Racer start Race one in 15th, with VW Commercial Vehicles UK director, Simon Elliott, at the wheel. Elliott battled hard to make up several places, crossing the line in 11th place, which would be his grid spot for the second race of the weekend.
Keen to build on the result, Elliott made a very strong start to Race two and moved up to eighth position by the first corner. However, an incident caused Elliott to drop positions after taking avoiding action. Over the remaining laps, Elliott was involved in a number of close battles, posting his quickest lap time of the two races before crossing the line 14th.
Completely new for the 2011 season, the new Caddy Racer is powered by a 2.0-liter gasoline engine developing 270hp, channeled through the front wheels via a six-speed Volkswagen Racing quick-shift transmission. It also has the multi-link rear suspension system found in the VW Golf. Rounds 5 and 6 of the Volkswagen Racing Cup takes place at Brands Hatch over the weekend of 18-19 June.
