The FIA World Motor Sport Council announced the current Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) will receive world championship status in the 2012 season. The FIA World Endurance Championship to be created in cooperation with the Le Mans organizer ACO (Automobile Club de l'Ouest) and will include the Le Mans 24 Hours race as part of the championship.

The FIA also announced a new "GT World Class" in which GT cars from the current GT1, GT2 and GT3 categories will compete for the GT world champion's title in a single class.

This decision should help the sport become more recognized as a world championship and make it less confusing for fans following the races.
