As announced yesterday on the News pages at www.eurotuner.com, VW was celebrating the 35th anniversary of the iconic GTI model at the GTI-Treffen in Wörthersee, Austria.
This week-long festival is the largest VW enthusiasts’s meet in the world and Volkswagen celebrated with a special Edition 35 model of the latest VW GTI, that will be sold in Europe.
It also announced a recently restored 1977 Golf GTI 16S Group 4 racer would be unveiled at the show.
We finally have more photos and you can see them here. The 1600cc Oettinger engine puts out a remarkable 215hp to the crank without a turbocharger.
The classic GTI was built to race in the 3-hour Classic race that takes place before the famous Nurburgring 24-hour race each year. With Volkswagen’s support, KWL Motorsport in Germany rebuilt the GTI with Bilstein suspension, a sequential five-speed VW Motorsport transmission and an 80-liter fuel tank.
Over the past two years, KWL Motorsport has had two class victories at the Nurburgring Classic in a Mk1 Scirocco in 2009 and 2010.
Patrick Simon and Heinz Stuber will again drive this 1977 Golf GTI 16S that has been entered into Group 4 for engines up to 2.0 liters.
