On Friday 19 August at 07:45am, a Škoda Octavia vRS officially became the fastest 2.0-liter supercharged production car in the world when the 600hp ‘salt spec’ racer registered a speed of 227.070 mph on Utah’s legendary Bonneville Salt Flat. This was sanctioned by the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) to become an official record.

The modified production Octavia vRS was prepared by Škoda UK to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the iconic vRS performance flagship badge and the company’s 110th anniversary in motorsport.

The previous record in the G/PS category was 216mph, set in August 1998. However, it was smashed at this year's Bonneville Speed Week (13-19 August) by an impressive official record speed of 227.080mph.

Driven by journalist Richard Meaden and tuned in a large part by Software specialist Revo Technik, the Octavia had broken the 200mph barrier on six previous runs that week.

The Octavia’s record-breaking runs consisted of two official runs on Bonneville's famous five-mile course at 225.513mph on Thursday 18 August, and a return run at 228.647mph on Friday 19 August.

Robert Hazelwood, Director for ŠKODA UK, said: “This is a stunning achievement. Our goal was to break 200mph as a celebration of 10 years of vRS. We achieved that, and significantly more. The success is a tribute to everybody who has worked so tirelessly and with such passion to make Škoda a world beater.”
