Pioneer • MSRP: $59
There are lots of earbuds out there, but these new ones from Pioneer are designed for people who enjoy being dirty. In fact, they’re perfect for activities such as going to the gym, jogging, mountain biking, etc. That’s because Pioneer’s SE-CL331 earbuds are water-resistant and elements such as perspiration and dust can simply be rinsed away. The protected 9mm driver is said to provide deeper bass performance for all types of music. The in-ear design and four interchangeable ear-tips (XS, S, M, L) also decrease the intrusion of outside noise, making it easier to enjoy the music. They come with a long 3.9’ cord for flexibility and are available in yellow, blue, pink and white.
We definitely like the washable aspect of the earbuds but that’s only half the story: how do they sound? Comparing to regular iPhone 4 earbuds, and with the EQ turned off, the Pioneer buds have more volume but it can introduce some distortion at full volume. The treble is more pronounced, as is the mid-range. The bass was slightly stronger, giving a richer sound on certain tracks. But with Bass Booster selected in the EQ, there was less to choose between them. In its favor, the Pioneer buds fit the ear well with the choice of tips, although we did find the bigger jack-plug hard to use with our protective iPhone case – Greg
