It’s been estimated there could be 2.8 million electric vehicles registered worldwide by 2020 if sales continue at their present rate. With this in mind, and with auto makers constantly looking for low rolling resistance tires, Continetnal has introduced the new Conti.eContact for the growing market.

Conti.eContact introduces new tire dimensions by combining a larger wheel diameter with a narrow tread pattern, such as 195/55 R20 instead of a traditional 205/55 R16. This concept should result in substantially reduced rolling resistance. A more flexible sidewall on the tire is claimed to result in less energy loss when deflecting or rebounding.

Continental’s tire engineers started with a new approach to the Conti.eContact to ensure the tire excelled at wet braking. Wide circumferential grooves, a flat contour and smooth off-shoulder design result in an efficient and durable tire for the electric vehicle market.

The tire will also carry unique sidewall lettering. The ‘BLUECO’ logo will in future denote a series of innovative tire technologies designed specifically for electric vehicles.
