Having been hinted at in concept form, Ford is unveiling the production version of its Fiesta ST model following reports from company insiders that they wanted a product that could capitalize on the Fiesta’s motorsport activities in WRC, X Games, Rally America, etc.
As expected, the Fiesta ST will be powered by a 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine delivering 180hp, giving a 0-62mph time of “less than seven seconds” and a top speed of more than 136mph.
This level of performance, coupled with attractive styling, a highly competitive price and what is bound to be a class-leading chassis, should make it very popular in its chosen markets.
The car was built using Ford’s global Performance Car DNA and developed by Ford Team RS in Europe, working with Ford’s motorsport partners on the WRC, rallycross and racing versions proved invaluable for the new ST.
Production is confirmed for Europe but we’re assured Ford is also considering its introduction in other regions, including North America for the first time, following the positive response to the five-door Fiesta ST concept that debuted in North American at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.
“We’re delighted to bring a new generation Fiesta ST to European enthusiasts in 2013 and we’ll have more to say about our plans for other markets in the near future,” said Jost Capito, head of Ford’s RS and SVT teams. “With the Fiesta ST joining the new Focus ST, we will be able to deliver a choice of affordable performance cars designed to deliver a unique blend of styling and on-road performance with true practicality for everyday use.”
The driving dynamics are enhanced by a Torque Vectoring Control system, re-tuned chassis that sits 15mm lower than a regular Fiesta, and three stability control settings – with everything tested during 3100 miles on Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit.
The interior features standard Recaro seats in a Fiesta ST for the first time. It will also be equipped with MyKey, allowing owners to limit performance and ensure activation of safety features for less-experienced drivers; and the voice-activated SYNC in-car system.
A new bold exterior design drives home the high performance message and features the latest Ford design signatures including a large trapezoidal grille.
