While we continue to see VW Amorak pickups in the US, spying one recently in Arizona undergoing off-road testing, there are still no plans to bring the German pickup to this country. This is all the more disappointing when Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles presents such an appealing proposition as the Amarok Canyon concept vehicle at the Geneva auto show.

Configured for freestyle kayaking, the concept shows the versatility of the vehicle. All aspects were designed to meet the requirements of the extreme sport – from the running gear to details of the cargo box.

The concept is significantly taller and wider than the production Amarok. The body, which is painted in bright ‘Baladi orange’ paint, was raised 40mm with a lift kit. Including the taller tires, the concept is a full 3.3” taller than the production model. Two electrically deployed tread plates make it easier for occupants to step into the vehicle, despite the raised ride height.

The concept’s width has been increased to accommodate outdoor activities. The fenders were widened 1.4” on each side to make room for the 275/65 R18 AT tires, mounted on ‘Durban’ wheels painted in ‘High Gloss Adamantium Dark’.

The pick-up also has auxiliary headlights mounted on the roof, with visual accents provided by smoked rear lights and color-contrasting underbody protection.

The two carbon fiber kayaks awee mounted to the cargo floor: with the floor incorporating two cut-outs with soft padding at the rear. The bows of each kayak are mounted on a styling bar in ‘High Gloss Adamantium Dark’ with straps to secure the craft.

The paddles are latched in place on the inside surface of the tailgate, ready to grab. All other gear – white-water helmets, flotation devices and rafting shoes – are stowed securely: the helmets in nets on the front wall of the cargo bed, and the rest of the gear in smaller boxes that can be locked with watertight lids.

Inside, the leather seats have two-tone styling: the surfaces are in ‘sterling’ color, while the head restraints and side supports are offset in ‘adamant’. The decorative seams on the seats take on the orange-red color of the body. This color is also reflected in numerous details such as in the seams of the three-spoke steering wheel and gear shift lever, the safety belts and the air vents.

Housed in a cowl in the cockpit are three auxiliary instruments. They show the climbing and tilt angles of the Amarok, which gives the driver information on extreme off-road drives.

To enable maximum off-road ability, the Amarok concept is powered by a 2.0 TDI bi-turbo with 180hp, which provides a maximum torque of 295 lb-ft from 1500-2250rpm.

The switchable 4Motion all-wheel drive system – together with a reduction gearbox and differential lock at the rear axle – ensures effective power transfer to the wheels even in the toughest off-road conditions.
