With the new Focus ST going on sale later this summer, Ford is touting its factory “overboost” function that extends the torque curve for up to 15 seconds on the 252hp, 270 lb-ft 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine.
The gains extend the peak torque from 3000rpm to 4500rpm, maintaining acceleration for longer. This is the first such system on a Ford EcoBoost engine sold in North America, although the European variants have had it for some time.
While Ford engineers specified a turbo for sustained, high-output performance, they programmed the ECU to provide more boost past 3000rpm. This provides more acceleration for brief periods until the peak boost is again limited to maintain engine safety and durability for the life of the car.
Ford is offering the GoPro HD Hero2 Motorsports Edition camera pack to drivers who pre-order a Focus ST. The first 1000 orders placed before August 20 are eligible.
