When a man loves a woman its special and life changing. When a woman loves a car, hell falls to its knees in adoration. Alyssa is just such a woman.
Her love affair with Volkswagens began honestly enough. Her boyfriend (now husband) brought her along to a dealership to bring home his new Mk5 GTI. While she stood patiently by her man, a shimmering 2004 Satellite Blue New Beetle started to flirt for her attention. The Beetle ultimately won, several days later Alyssa would return and bring the car home with her. Her spiraling love affair with VW had begun.
As the years passed, life set in. A marriage, some children and a bit of maturing; every occasion was complimented by an appropriate Volkswagen. Mk6 BMP GTI (chipped, tuned and Porsche Twisted to keep up with the husbands crew), VW Routan (for the kids), 2011 VW CC Executive (for maturity). Alyssa made sure her life was surround by cars she fell in love with ¬¬– the Routan met needs other than speed and style.
Its here we find ourselves faced with the unique feature car before you, a 1991 VW Cabriolet Etienne Aigner Edition. One of only 399 Bordeaux EA’s in the U.S. and even fewer equipped with an automatic transmission. We stumbled across Alyssa’s car while attending Waterfest 18 in Englishtown, NJ.
We were drawn to cars unique character. The embroidered patterned seats, a Bordeaux canvas top, and a low stance on top of some glorious “80’s trash” wheels. How could we resist.
Alyssa would explain her discovery of the car and how she was able to come home with it. After letting her beloved CC Executive go, she soon found herself in a pavement-blending sedan. She had to be back in a VW, if only just for the weekends.
While hunting on VwVortex she stumbled across a Cabriolet and a Fox Pickup. Inquiring about the cabriolet, fait would prove to be cruel, as the car had already been sold. It was down to the pickup and the EA Cabby she discovered. After discussing with her husband about the new toy she wanted to bring home, he agreed so long as she would let him bring home a motorcycle. Clearly we know the results of that arduous debate.
After a long wait and a surprisingly wonderful experience buying a car through PayPal, the car was home. A thorough detailing by Jay of North Penn Imports the EA Cabby was restored to its original showroom glamour.
Adding various personal touches was next on Alyssa’s checklist. A set extremely rare 15x8 Melber Scacchiera II Wheels were singed, sealed and delivered thank to the David at MemoryFab.com. MemoryFab is known for locating rare wheels and going a step further making sure they fit the car they are intended for. As with Alyssa’s Bordeaux beauty, her wheels would be drilled to accommodate the 4x100 bolt pattern. “I had never seen wheels like these before and just kenw I had to have them. Many people told me not to get them, but I didn’t care. I was SOLD! I fell in love with the whole ‘80’s trash vibe they gave out.”
Fellow friend and mechanic at NLS (Nothing Leaves Stock in Coopersburg, PA), Josh would get ahold of the car and make sure it was ready for the road in all aspects. Even in the stance department supplying the car with a set of H&R Ultra Low springs. Least we forget that the oil pan was in need of reinforcement due to its new relationship with the ground. Making sure rubbing and wheel care were taken care of a set of 25mm spacers were fitted out back wile 5mm spacers were installed up front.
Since the original owner couldn’t find the time or funds to refit the original top the car came with a black canvas top instead. Alyssa had to make sure the EA was fitted with original hat. Craig at Craig’s Auto Marine in Telford, PA stepped in and seemed to have fallen in love with the car as well. Offering to complete the installation at a price that was too good to pass up.
Finishing off the exterior OEM+ look, a set of smoked crosshair headlights with silverstar bulbs were added along with the already supplied round badgeless grille.
Alyssa is not ashamed of her lust for VW. Planning plenty of mods while the EA Cabby is in her possession – which she’s assured us, will follow her to the grave. Plans of a 2.0 ABA engine swap, shaved engine bay, a 5-speed automatic transmission upgrade, even a potential re-spray and cosmetic enhancements are in the works for this playfully EA Cabby.
Further entrenching Alyssa’s love affair with VW as she has now slipped into the realm of lifetime owner. There really is nothing anyone can do about it except appreciate her happiness when she glows talking about her car. This relatively new love affair with VW has left its mark on her heart and she gets to show it off every chance she gets.
