Crossing the finish line by only 27.8 seconds ahead of second place Sébastian Loeb, Jan-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttilla won the Wales Rally GB for the second consecutive season. Fellow teammates, Petter Solberg and Chris Patterson would also stand on the podium finishing in third.
Conditions on the fast and flowing forest roads of central and south Wales were as tricky as ever. Rain made the gravel tracks muddy, but Ford controlled the rally from the start as first Solberg and then Latvala led.
Solberg held the advantage for Friday’s opening two tests in mid-Wales before Latvala moved to the front of the field. Once at the front Latvala would hold firm his lead resulting in Solberg and Loeb’s battle for second.
Loeb and Solberg would go toe-to-toe throughout the weekend exchanging second place through nearly every speed test on the third leg. Solberg missed out on second place by only 0.9sec after a 19 stage, 201.82 mile event.
“This win means a lot to me,” said Latvala. “Rally GB is like a second home event because I started my career here 10 years ago, and I have more experience of this event than my own rally in Finland. It’s one of my favorite rounds and this is the first time in my career that I have won the same rally in consecutive seasons.”
Even with Ford’s 1st and 3rd podium finish, Citroen is certain to win the overall WRC Championship Title. Loeb has laid down another impressive season winning more than half of the events this year.
