Falken Expands Involvement In Formula D For 2017

After years of scaling back, tire maker comes back strong with a six-car squad

Mar 23, 2017

Just days from now the 2017 Formula DRIFT (FD) Championship gets underway, and while we’ve got plenty of stories on tap for you next week covering new cars in the series as well as older entries with new looks, Falken revealed today promising news about its short-term future in FD. In step with the launch of its latest version of the RT615k+ extreme performance summer tire, Team Falken will return to Formula D with a field of six – count ‘em – six drivers, harkening back to the heyday of Falken’s involvement in pro drift.

It’s been a few years since we’ve seen Falken’s iconic teal-and-blue livery on any car in FD, but this season two 240SXs will rock the motif, the V8 Nissans of Odi Bakchis and Matt Field. Additionally, Falken is supporting veterans Dai Yoshihara in his Subaru BRZ and Justin Pawlak in his Ford Mustang, as well as transplants James Deane, a five-time Irish Drift Champion and five-time European Drift champ, and Piotr Wieck, a three-time Polish Champion. Each will be in 2JZ-powered S15 Silvia. (We asked for photos of the team cars but Falken didn’t have any so we fished what we could from the social media pond.)

Falken Tires also becomes the Official Tire Sponsor of Formula D and will further activate its involvement through dealer hospitality, spokes model meet and greets, driver autograph signings, and a learning center display through its Falken rig at most of the series’ eight rounds.

After years of scaling back its involvement in FD, this plan marks a significant return to form for a squad that is synonymous with the sport. Last year Falken took the Tire Manufacturer’s Championship and looks to repeat if it can this year. The chase begins March 31st on the Grand Prix of Long Beach street circuit and continues throughout the 2017 season.
