Formula DRIFT Pro2 Class of 2016

Meet the 8 newly licensed Pro competitors called up to the big leagues for 2017

Oct 4, 2016
Photographer: David Karey

Inspired perhaps by the 2016 Formula DRIFT (FD) Pro Championship grand finale this Friday and Saturday at Irwindale Speedway in California, and as we wait for our shooter’s photo gallery from this past weekend’s FD Pro2 season ender in Arizona, we decided to pull together a little gallery of photographer David Karey magic over the course of the year showcasing the eight drivers who earned their Pro licenses for 2017. The list includes Marc Landreville, Jeff Jones, Andrew Lewis, Dirk Stratton, Dan Burkett, Ryan Litteral, Nate Hamilton, and Matt Madrigali. Congratulations to all of them – here’s a few notes on each of their respective 2016 seasons.

MARC LANDREVILLE

So this ex-pro from Canada was unstoppable this year, qualifying first in three rounds, finishing no lower than second place over Pro2’s four rounds, and with a 130-point lead in the season’s final standings. He won in Florida, Texas, and Arizona after taking silver in the ’16 opener at Road Atlanta in Georgia.

JEFF JONES

Jones ran his Pro2 program concurrently with his Pro campaign, doing far better in the farm league with a victory in Georgia and runner-up in Florida. He finishes the year second in the points table.

Lewis in another 2J S-chassis got on the podium once this year – 3rd place at Round 3: Texas – and made it into every Top 16 of 2016, getting as deep as the semifinals in Orlando as well.

DIRK STRATTON

Stratton has been on an impressive trajectory this year, the ’15 MDU champ basically improving each round. He qualified 16th for Round 1, and then 8th twice before earning a no. 4 qualifier on his way to the first podium of his Pro2 run, a third-place finish in Arizona. The “Driftvette” should be fun to watch at the Pro level.

We’ve been following Dan around for years and cannot be more excited about his promotion, especially since his Mk4 Supra is a fairly unusual machine at the top levels of drifting. He almost didn’t make it, though, suffering an electrical issue in Texas that prevented him from qualifying; luckily he made the most of every other opportunity, climbing into the semifinals at Road Atlanta and Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.

We’ve known Ryan for some time as well and are super pumped he’s moving up to Pro. His best round in ’16 was the first, Road Atlanta, where he finished on the podium in third, but he made every Top 16 this season, too.

Hamilton was also Pro previously before getting relegated to Pro2. He’s now returning to the top tier after improving every round this season, missing Round 1 tandems but then making Top 16 in Florida and going all the way to the finals in Arizona, where he lost to Landreville but picked up a second-place finish.

MATT MADRIGALI

The 2015 Golden Gate Drift champ had what initially looked like a pretty gnarly wreck in qualifying at Round 4 but bounced back the next day. He made every Top 16 for the entire season and went as deep as the Final 4 at Round 2 in his 240SX, nabbing a third-place trophy.
