Hyundai Genesis Coupe To Be Discontinued After 2016 Model Year

Genesis brand will get a “more sophisticated and luxurious coupe”

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe will be discontinued after the 2016 model year, a Hyundai rep confirmed. There's no word on a sporty two-door replacement for the Hyundai brand, but the upscale Genesis marque will get a more luxury-focused coupe.

The Genesis Coupe arrived for the 2010 model year, and was immediately compared to the Infiniti G37 coupe, to which the pre-refresh car bore a strong resemblance. The rear-drive car launched with a 3.8-liter V-6 producing 306 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque and a turbocharged 2.0-liter making 210 hp and 223 lb-ft. A refresh arrived for the 2013 model year, giving the Genesis Coupe a unique but polarizing exterior. It also brought with it a big bump in power for the 2.0-liter turbo, which was raised to 274 hp and 275 lb-ft. That wasn't enough to save the four-pot option from the chopping block in 2014, however. The 2016 Hyundai Genesis Coupe offers 348 hp and 295 lb-ft from its direct-injected 3.8-liter V-6, and has an available eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Genesis Coupe competed in a varied and dwindling class of rear-drive sport coupes, going up against V-6-powered pony cars like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, as well as the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ twins and the more upscale Infiniti Q60 (formerly G37 coupe) the car Hyundai originally targeted. Except for Ford and Chevy, hardly anyone is getting rich off of these niche sport coupes. So you couldn't blame Hyundai for killing off the low-margin Genesis Coupe. But there's another reason why it got the axe.

Ever since it announced late last year that Genesis would be spun off into its own luxury brand, Hyundai has made a big push to keep the mainstream Hyundai name separate from its new premium marque. To that end, the second-gen Hyundai Equus has been renamed Genesis G90, and even the original Genesis sedan has been rebranded as the Genesis G80. After all that shuffling, keeping a non-premium model that shares its name with your luxury brand might cause some confusion.

Though the Hyundai brand will have to make do without a sporty rear-drive option, the Genesis brand will soon get a two-door offering of its own. In an email, Hyundai spokeswoman Christine Henley told us, "A new, more sophisticated and luxurious coupe appropriate for the new Genesis brand is currently under development." We're guessing it'll look something like the Vision G coupe concept from last year.
