Irwindale Speedway Saved – For Now

11th-hour reprieve by driver Tim Huddleson and Justice Brothers ensures short oval and drag strip will live on

The rumors of Irwindale’s closure have run wild for years, leaving the topic all but swept aside like the next celebrity scandal. Despite this, the most recent “closure” seemed all too real. The title fight for Formula DRIFT 2017 was labeled as the “last one,” along with the Mooneyes Xmas Party, and a handful of other events.

Thankfully, many of these events will get to live on and we couldn’t think of a better way to ring in the New Year by announcing that the Irwindale Events Center will NOT be closing its doors. A new management group has come forward and according to Vice President of Communication for the track, Doug Stokes, will bring about many improvements to the facility.

This group, set to take over the management of Irwindale at the end of January, is led by short track driver Tim Huddleson and his affiliates at Justice Brothers. Team 211 and Jim Cohan will no longer be handling track management. “These are the right people to operate this facility, they have the background, the acumen, and the energy,” said Cohan. “They know racing and they know marketing. This is really a win for everyone, especially the fans.” As of now, the drag strip and oval track will remain operational under the guise of a multi-years agreement between Huddleson/Justice Brothers, and the property owners.

It seems like every few years, a different version of this story gets published, and every time, the track is saved at the last minute. We encourage fans to get out to the track and help keep it alive for good. Make it a family affair to go out to the track on the weekends because there is something there for everyone. Doing this will help keep the track and the hobby of cars alive and well in SoCal. You don’t have to own or drive a racecar to love the hobby. Long live Irwindale!
