Mercedes-Benz EQ Silver Arrow Debuts in Monterey

Pays homage to race car from the 1930s

Some of the best concept cars recall the past. And this is what Mercedes is trying to accomplish with the EQ Silver Arrow, which made its world debut at Pebble Beach.

The concept pays homage to the W 125 Silver Arrow, which Mercedes built in 1937 as a Grand Prix car. At the same time, the car also previews the future design language for Mercedes, particularly its EQ subbrand.

The one-seater vehicle features an Alubeam Silver paint job that resembles the paint of the original car. Long and low, this 17.4-foot-long rocket has a body structure made of carbon fiber. The model features partially free-standing wheels, with non-rotating hub caps and 168 spokes each. Prominent EQ badging hints at the car's electric aspirations. Mercedes said the model is conceived to make 738 hp and achieve a range of over 250 mph through an electric powertrain. It has a 80-kilowatt-hour battery.

Step inside and you'll find just one seat like the W 125. Brown leather mixes with brushed aluminum and wood accents, as well as suede on the side walls. The model also features a large panoramic screen that can tell you which lane of the roadway supports inductive charging. Drivers can "race" classic or current Silver Arrow cars; the panoramic screen will superimpose a virtual racetrack onto the real road.

The EQ Silver Arrow follows two other wild concepts Mercedes has brought to Monterey Car Week in the past few years. In 2016, it debuted the Vision 6 Mercedes-Maybach concept coupe, and a year later, it debuted the cabriolet version.

Earlier this year, Subaru announced the WRX STI would get a 5-horsepower boost for 2019. No, it wasn’t much, but at least the STI would no longer be outgunned by the turbocharged four-cylinder Mustang. Subaru’s latest special edition STI, however, comes with a much less underwhelming boost in power. It’s called the WRX STI TC 380, and
