Castrol Syntec Top Car Challenge - New Contest, $10,000 Cash Prize And Bragging Rights

Apr 1, 2009

Last year's Castrol Syntec Top Shop Challenge was so successful that we are at it again this year, but with a whole new twist! Rather than building engines and seeing how well they perform, the Castrol Syntec Top Car Challenge will be a competition to find the top street car in the United States. Six of our sister publications (Super Street, Import Tuner, Honda Tuning, eurotuner, Lowrider and 5.0 Mustang) will be battling us for Top Car supremacy.

Before we go ahead and pick our car, we're inviting you, our readers, to submit your cars for consideration to compete in the challenge. Because we won last year's Top Shop Challenge, we are looking to repeat it again this year, meaning we want the best of the best. If you think your car could potentially be tops in the country, submit it to the official website Alternatively, you don't have to enter your car, but by signing up you have a chance at winning $10,000. If that isn't enough motivation to sign up, we don't know what is!

The website will have plenty of updates and progress on the competition throughout the year so be sure to check it out as often as you can. We'll also bring you updates on the Top Car Challenge in these pages in the coming months.

For those interested in entering their car, here are the categories that the cars will be tested on:

Lap Times: Teams compete for the single fastest lap time during a 20-minute session on the road course.

Quarter-Mile Time: Cars compete for quickest ending times, best of three runs.

Quarter-Mile Trap Speed: Cars compete for fastest trap speed, best of three runs.

Horsepower: Using a dyno, cars will be tested to find who has the highest peak horsepower. Teams will be limited to three runs.

Power-to-Weight Ratio: Cars will be weighed at the dyno to calculate who has the best ratio.

Emissions: Vehicles will be tested with a five-gas automobile emissions analyzer.

Acceleration: 0-60 mph using a radar gun.

Braking: 80-0 mph using a radar gun.

Endurance: Cars will have to test out their endurance in the brutal test of Los Angeles traffic by driving to the track in the middle of rush hour.

Vehicle Cost: Scores will be based on the current used-car value from

There you have it! The rules have been set and the battle lines have been drawn. Expect some monster cars competing in this competition. It's bound to be an epic battle!

Less is more. Keep it simple. Go for an OEM look. Ice Sorsongsermkul isn't hearing any of that. In fact, he's gone completely the opposite direction with his RX-7, with a spec list that reads like a "who's who" of the tuning industry.
