Destined for the ’11 Britcar MSA Endurance Championship is the Mazda MX-5 GT, an extreme race version of the iconic roadster. The brainchild of British race team Jota Sport, the MX-5 GT takes the two most direct roots to performance drop weight and increase output. Jota performed some serious surgery, cutting away steel and glass, then swapping in carbon-fiber door panels, body parts, the dashboard, polycarbonate windows and an acid-dipped body. These endeavors dropped 607 lbs from the 2,480-lb Miata.
The underhood area was also lavished with attention. Jota is more secretive about its power generation, but pegged output in the 275hp range, a significant boost from the stock Miata’s 167 hp. Boost is the operative word, as we think the team may have used a variant of the Mazdaspeed Miata turbo engine for the build. The Britcar competition better watch their doors.
