Nov 17, 2011

Subaru’s version of the Scion FR-S RWD sports car, which is currently under joint development with Toyota Motor Corporation, will be named the Subaru BRZ. BRZ stands for “Boxer engine,” “Rear-wheel drive,” and “Zenith.” Get it? A technology concept of the car, dubbed the Subaru BRZ PROLOGUE — BOXER Sports Car Architecture II (say that fast three times) debuted at the 64th Frankfurt Motor Show. But the big news is Subaru indicated production is planned to start in spring 2012.

The company also released some specs, namely the key dimensions. The BRZ will be 165 inches long, 69.7 inches wide, 50 inches tall and sport a 101-inch wheelbase. For comparison, the current WRX hatch is 173.8 inches long, 70.7 inches wide, 58.1 inches tall and runs a 103.3-inch wheelbase. A 2.0-liter, direct-injected boxer-4 rated somewhere in the 200hp neighborhood will power the proceedings.
