The Scion Racing Sparco Rally xD entered last week’s STPR rally leading in the championship points in the 2 Wheel Drive category but it didn’t take very long for all of that to change. On the very first day of racing on stage 3, rally racing took its toll on the xD and took it out from the competition. Pictures can sometimes describe things better than words as this picture below clearly shows what sort of damage occurred.

“It was definitely disappointing to DNF at any event. Being that this is our very first DNF ever is somewhat surprising but also a testament to how much we attempt to keep the car well serviced. To DNF after just taking the lead in the points for the championship doesn’t make it any easier,” said team manager, Philip Chase. The Sparco Rally xD team is now back in 2nd place in the championship standings with two events remaining.

The team is looking to regroup quickly as they embark on the famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb early next month and will have to transform the tarmac set-up for Pikes Peak back to gravel-spec in order to head directly to Maine for the 5th event in the Rally America Championship.

Online on the team site is spectator footage of the damage: http://www.rallyxd.com/rallyxd/2012/06/video-rally-xd-looses-rear-wheels/

Earlier this year, Subaru announced the WRX STI would get a 5-horsepower boost for 2019.
