Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Turbo are the newest offerings of the famed line from Porsche, the 911 Turbo and Turbo S. The 911 Turbo epitomizes ultimate performance for both track and street so it should come as a no surprise that the newest Turbo family member carries the torch proudly. No, they haven't just slapped on more power and said 'here ya go,' rather Porsche has literally redefined everything about the Turbo nameplate.
The new Turbo and Turbo S feature a new all-wheel drive system, active rear axle steering, adaptive aerodynamics, full LED headlights, new chassis, 3.9-inch longer wheelbase and larger 20-inch wheels, wider rear body panel by 1.1-inches than the 911 Carrera 4, and offered for the first time on Turbo models is the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) active anti-roll system.
The turbocharged 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection is given a boost of 20hp up to 520hp and a torque increase of 7ft-lb to 487ft-lb while the S model produces 560hp (an increase of 30) with the same 516ft-lb of torque. Although both Turbo's are mated with an efficient seven-speed dual clutch trans (with the stop/start function activating earlier while coming to a stop), its disheartening that true enthusiasts won't have the option of a traditional manual.
The PTM all-wheel drive system with electronically controlled and activated multi-plate coupling is equipped with a new water cooling function. This brings more drive torque to the front wheels, improving on the previous 911 Turbo's system. Additionally, the optional Sport Chrono Package Pus helps to accelerate the Turbo from 0-60 in a quick 3.2-seconds (to a top speed of 196mph), while the Turbo S gets there in an even quicker 2.9-seconds (reaching 198mph).
Improving performance capabilities is rear wheel steering, introduced on all Turbo models. Consisting of two electro-mechanical actuators rather than the conventional control links, the steering angle of the rear wheels can be varied by up to 2.8 degrees, depending on speed. At lower speeds of up to 31mph, the system recognizes when the front wheels are turned and steers the rear wheels in the opposite direction (equivalent to a virtual shortening of the wheelbase of 9.8-inches). This not only improves turning into corners, but also parking. While at speeds over 50mph, the rear wheel are steered parallel to the front and this increases steering input. This is also equivalent to a virtual lengthening of the wheelbase of 19.6-inches.
Offered on both Turbo models for the first time is a new active aerodynamic system, consisting of retractable three-stage front spoiler, deployable rear wing with three adjustable positions. While in the performance position, all segments of the front spoiler and rear wing are fully extended.
The interior is redesigned in both Turbo models as well as featuring new options. The S offers the exclusive black/Carrera red combination and standard Sport Seats Plus with 18-way adjustable memory. While the seat back shells are upholstered in leather with double cap seams and various carbon elements, not to mention a new state of the art Burmester sound system available as an option. Other options include a radar-controlled cruise control system and a camera-based road sign and speed limit recognition.
Arriving to speed hungry buyers at the end of this year, the 911 Turbo is priced starting at $148300 while the Turbo S starts at $181100 (not including destination for $950). We seriously hope to get our hands on one of these bad boys. Either Turbo will do.
