Spied! Mercedes-AMG GT 4 Prototype Hits the Streets

Four-door GT spotted for the first time

Just over a week has passed since we saw the four-door Mercedes-AMG GT concept at the Geneva Motor Show, and already a prototype for the upcoming car has been spotted.

The four-door retains the same cab-rearward proportions of the concept, and also sports a narrow greenhouse and swoopy raked roofline that's obscured somewhat by faux bodywork on the trunk. Not surprisingly, the wild, hexagonal center exhaust outlet has been swapped out for a more traditional AMG quad-tipped setup. The headlights, though camouflaged, appear similar to the concept, and in back we can just barely make out the slender taillights inspired by the AMG GT coupe.

The four-door AMG GT, likely to be called AMG GT 4 when it hits production, will share a name with the GT sports car, but that's about all the two will have in common. The GT 4 is expected to ride on the MRA platform that underpins the new E-Class. The concept's hybrid 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 powertrain was said to be production-ready, and output could be as high as 805 hp. Mercedes will apply "EQ Power+" branding to that high-performance hybrid drivetrain. Base models should make nearly 500 hp from a non-hybrid twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8.

Given this car's E-Class bones, you may be wondering where that leaves the similarly swoopy CLS. Word has it that the next CLS, which was also spied recently, will be lengthened and shifted more toward luxury in order to better position it between the E-Class and S-Class. The GT 4 will be the sportier option aimed directly at the Porsche Panamera.

Expect to see the AMG GT 4 debut in production trim sometime next year to wrap up the AMG brand's 50th anniversary celebrations.
