What Up G?
Toyota had a big buzz going on at the Tokyo Auto Salon, and we're not talking about sticky accelerator pedals. It could be a paradigm shift in how Toyota approaches the aftermarket. There were a number of sharply dressed Yotas with a 'G' logo and 'Toyota G Sports' branded to them.
G Sports is an all-new Toyota tuning division tasked with providing in-house, factory tuned Toyota products modded to the preferences of the customer. These cars are expected to hit the road in summer 2010. The G Sports palette will include interior and exterior enhancements and mechanicals with an emphasis on handling.
What about TRD? We are wondering where TRD fits in the mix. We see it still supplying performance hard parts. The rumor mill has G Sports cars landing on the deep end, with bigger bottom line price tags. G Sports will most likely work with body kit maker Modelista, which has a close relationship with Toyota. The FT-86 G Sports Concept made quite a first impression (as you no doubt saw in last month's TAS coverage) and we hope this is a resurrection of Toyota as a performance car maker. - Evan Griffey
