Double-Down: Super Lap Battle At Xdc/Remix

News, Rumors Stuff We Made Up
Las Vegas Motor Speedway set the scene for the second Super Lap Battle event of the year as we inch toward the 2010 Super Lap Battle Finals in November. In conjunction with the time attack action, XDC held their drift competition for would-be drift superstar-hopefuls to get their Formula D license, along with Remix putting on a car show for the local 702 enthusiasts.

Unlimited Class
In typical Las Vegas fashion, we set out to make this event a title fight, bringing the heavyweights together in each class to go head-to-head with each other. For the Unlimited Class, we had the AWD-powerhouse, Crawford Performance in their Subaru STI match up with the Unlimited FR record holder, Cricket/FX Motorsports in their Acura NSX. At last year's SLB Finals at Buttonwillow, the FX team was able to get a 1:45.247 with Crawford a few tenths behind with a 1:45.552. During the off-season, the guys at FX took some time to refine their NSX and it really showed with them getting the overall win with a blistering time of 1:43.145. The Crawford team, on the other hand, had other projects to work on, so their GRB hadn't seen action on a track for the past seven months. Even with the downtime, they were still able to post a very respectable 1:48.714 for 2nd place overall and fastest Unlimited AWD.

Battle Of The Ffs
While we had planned to match up the look-alike EGs owned by Tage Evanson (Ksport/Hasport) and Loi Song (Sportcar Motion), respectively, things didn't work out quite as planned. On the very first session, the Sportcar Motion EG had to pull into the pits without a lap time. Turns out the last event they ran in, the oil pump started to fail so when they took it out for the warm-up lap at this event, it completely died and starved the motor of its much needed oil. Even though Tage didn't have a direct competitor to go against he went out to test a new front aero design. It still has some dialing-in to do, but he was able to record a time of 1:53.620.

Limited Class
Taking a cue from boxer, Manny Pacquiao, the Evasive Motorsports team has been training to move up a class to Unlimited AWD after holding the Limited AWD title from 2007-08. With a last-minute dropout by the UMS team in Limited AWD, we asked the Evasive guys to move back down to the Limited AWD class to match up with AQ Motorsports' Subaru STI. Evasive had their Evo setup for Unlimited Class tires, so most of the weekend was spent trying to dial their suspension in for the harder tires that the Limited Class requires. After making numerous suspension changes, Evasive was able to pull off a 1:52.740 but were edged out at the end by AQ's STI, which pulled out the win with a 1:52.527.

Street Class
With a one-year hiatus from competition, Nils Leufven brought out his street-driven Evo 8 (current Super Lap Battle Street AWD record holder), keeping it old school as he drove his car on the street to the track without a trailer in sight. To go up against Nils, we had a newcomer to the scene: Zenkai Motorsports and their Subaru STI. This was the first time the Zenkai car had seen the track, and in its debut event, was able to post a 1:55.960, just edging out Nils' time of 1:56.278. After this close contest, we know that the Street AWD class will be the class to watch at this year's SLB Finals in November. - Elliott Moran
