Forget the VIP look and get VIP styling and F1-inspired driving dynamics in the seductive Vettel Edition Infiniti FX50. Infiniti and Red Bull Racing have collaborated on a number of marketing and technology projects but this full car development exercise was more of a surprise. Just six months after the idea surfaced, the Infiniti FX designed for reigning Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel was unveiled at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. What began as a chat between the Red Bull Racing driver and Infiniti’s Chief Creative Officer, Shiro Nakamura, at the Geneva Show in March was revealed, in concept form, as Infiniti’s fastest car yet and, probably, the most exclusive crossover ever made.

Changes including increased power, lower weight, derestricted top speed, longer gearing, increased downforce and lowered and stiffer suspension turn what is already a sports car among crossovers into a 185 mph supercar. Along with carbon-fiber body panels and lightweight wheels to drop 46 kg and increase aerodynamics, power has been duly bumped. With an already potent 390 horsepower 5.0-liter V8 under the hood, a high-flow exhaust and a hard-hitting ECU upgrade were added to raise the tally to 420 horsepower. Once that drooled saliva dries, realize the Vettel is merely a one-off concept and while no production plans are eminent, it would make one sweet addition to Infiniti’s Performance Line of special-edition vehicles.
