Subaru made a number of performance and cosmetic upgrades to the STI for its send-off party. To improve cornering, the Multi-Mode Driver's Control Center Differential is now controlled electronically. The model also receives larger Brembo brakes with yellow calipers as well as beefier, 19-inch wheels.
Up front, look for a redesigned front bumper with a larger opening to enhance cooling. The lower grille features a blacked-out motif and a new geometric pattern, and the upper hexagonal grille gets a new black surround. The model also features a new wing design that flows through to the headlights. Many of the upgrades sound similar to those we received on the U.S.-spec 2018 STI, but there is a Final Edition badge on the door for some added specialness.
Not to forget the interior, Subaru went with a special red-and-black theme for the Final Edition. The automaker also added a larger 5.9-inch infotainment screen and rearview camera, as well as heated front seats. The instrument panel features a design that's distinct from its peers.
Only 150 models will be made, and after that, the U.K. market will have to find another rally-ready car as enticing as the WRX STI. In a statement, Subaru explained its decision to axe the STI. "With the launches of new models, and investment in platform and powertrains going forward, the timing has felt right to open a new chapter for Subaru and allow WRX STI's heritage to inform future developments rather than being continued," it said.
Subaru is stepping up its game when it comes to electrification. Itis expected to offer a plug-in hybrid model next year and then a pure EV by 2021. The automaker is investing heavily in R&D for electrification to achieve its goals.
The Subaru WRX STI Final Edition goes for 33,995 in the U.K.
Subaru says it expects the WRX STI to continue on here in the U.S. "for years to come." Next year, the automaker will launch the limited-edition WRX STI Type RA and the VIZIV Performance concept that debuted at the recent Tokyo Motor show gives us a glimpse at the next-gen WRX, and presumably also the next STI.
