Three Quicksilver Supras Bid To Rule The Streets Of Houston

We don't know if Raj, Karun Magon and Amar Sood have the same taste in clothes or women, or even the same taste in malt liquor. Frankly, we don't care. We do know, however, that these three brothers from Houston have the same taste in cars. They own these three virtually identical 1998 Supra twin turbos.

It began in 1993, when Karun first became hooked on the brutish, shark-like lines of the fourth-generation Supra. He saved his nickels and, in 1998 (the last year the Supra was imported to America), he was finally ready to make the purchase. He and Raj, who is an exotic automobile broker, tried to locate a twin turbo Supra with an automatic transmission for sale in the Gulf States area. A Toyota representative eventually located one in Florida and arranged to have the car shipped to a dealer in Houston.

Karun heard nothing from the Houston dealer for a month, until one day he dropped by the dealership and saw the car sitting on the showroom floor. It was for sale, but had been marked up $10,000 more than what the Toyota representative had quoted. For two weeks he argued with the dealership over the price of the car, and eventually bought it for the original price quoted.

A few months later, Karun and Raj ran into four other Supra owners at a local cruise spot. These Supras had been modified with various bolt-on upgrades, and impressed both Raj and Karun with their performance and predatory good looks. With ideas gathered from his newfound friends, Karun began to modify his car with his own combination of bolt-on upgrades.

A Blitz intake, Rod Millen downpipe and TRD exhaust were employed to open airflow. Next, Karun added supporting electronics, a GReddy Profec-B boost controller and turbo timer. Finally, a set of Eibach lowering springs were installed to drop the car into a more appropriate street fighting stance and allow it to crouch menacingly over a new set of 18-inch 5Zigen 5ZRs wrapped in Sumitomo HTRZ II rubber.

After seeing what his brother was able to do with the Supra, Raj decided he wanted one too, and put his modified 300ZX TT up for sale in September of 1999. He quickly found a buyer, and, in the same week, located a 1998 Quicksilver six-speed. The next Monday, Raj, Karun and Amar drove to Dallas to pick up the car and, by Wednesday, the Supra had received a Rod Millen downpipe, TRD exhaust and Blitz intake.

That summer, Raj installed a GReddy boost controller and gauge, a Blitz timer to wind the system down after hard use, AEM adjustable cam gears and an Unorthodox Racing underdrive pulley. The car was lowered using Eibach springs over a set of 18-inch Voltec wheels wrapped in Sumitomo rubber.

Karun knew his own ride needed a little something extra to keep his brother reaching. A 75-shot nitrous system was installed to give the car a little extra off-the-line thrust. He also added a front-mount GReddy intercooler for increased efficiency, and a Blitz blow-off valve to the intake tract, mainly for dramatic sound effects.

For personal listening pleasure in the cabin, Karun commissioned Progressive Autosports in Houston to design a custom sound system. Within the rear cargo area, two fiberglass enclosures each hold a 10-inch Image Dynamics subwoofer, while dual Precision Power amps sit in a central Plexiglas-covered enclosure below the nitrous bottle-one to drive the subs and one to lash the MB Quart door speakers up front.

In March of 2000, Amar got his '98 Quicksilver twin turbo. While the performance modification war between Karun and Raj was heating up, in March of 2000, Amar got his '98 Quicksilver twin turbo, which also has an automatic. Like the others, he lowered the car using Eibach springs, chose three-piece Blitz Technospeed wheels and Sumitomo HTRZ II rubber. In his next step, though, he took a different route. He had the car's factory ground effects painted silver to blend with the rest of the car.

"In general, the factory lines of this car are aerodynamically functional and very classy," he points out. "I didn't want to add any aftermarket ground effects or spoilers, so instead, I opted to paint the lower front, side and rear skirts to match the rest of the body."

Amar's brothers were quick to follow his lead. Incidentally, you'll notice all three cars also incorporate functional hood scoops-original equipment on European Supras-which were secured through family members in Europe and installed by cutting 4x7-inch slots into the factory sheetmetal.

After the cosmetic mods were complete, Amar dropped a select few power adders into the engine bay, a Rod Millen downpipe and A'PEXi N1 exhaust system. A K&N intake system now draws air in place of the stock airbox. Later, Amar added a GReddy Profec-B for on-the-fly boost control and two A'PEXi system meters, one on the A-pillar to read boost and one in the dash to monitor exhaust temperature.

As stated earlier, all three cars are still works in progress. Though all three brothers plan to push the power envelope, Raj's plans are the most concrete: switching to a GReddy single-turbo and upgraded fuel system. He has already installed a front-mount GReddy intercooler, like Karun's, in anticipation of ingesting the big T-78 turbocharger into his engine bay. It should be interesting to see what the other two will come up with to top him.

Despite the rather competitive nature of their modification rivalry, Supra ownership has been essential to bringing these three brothers back together through the chaos of their personal lives. Karun puts it best: "Four years later, our lives have completely changed, and so have our cars. We now live to prowl the streets of Houston, and haunt the domestics every Saturday night."

What's next, guys? Matching hats?
